Japanese Institute of Sawtelle

The Japanese Institute of Sawtelle, or JIS, is a Japanese language school and cultural education center that is welcoming for everyone! It is a K-12 Saturday school and requires that you know some level of Japanese. Your proficiency level will determine what ages you help in the classroom with (higher proficiency = higher grade levels).

Location: 2110 Corinth Ave, Los Angeles CA 90025

Time: 9:00am - 12:00pm

What would you do?

  • Help set up the classes for the day

  • Facilitate the lesson make sure have all the materials 

    • scissors, pencils, origami, monitoring tests and exams

  • Japanese language: translate, explain homework, help actually teach

  • Help the students adapt to the teacher speaking only Japanese 

  • Have fun with the kids!

This is a recurring commitment and our goal is to get students going every other week! If you cannot commit to that but would still like to participate please still fill out the form and talk to Bella or one of the other Co-CACS chairs.

Sunday, October 19th 9:00am and/or 12:00pm at Terasaki Budokan: 249 S Los Angeles St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

You will be setting up and/or cleaning up tables and chairs for a GIDRA reunion. Some more information about GIDRA: in 1969, student activists on the UCLA campus also founded GIDRA, a self-published grassroots newspaper, which was later moved off-campus to reach more community people. GIDRA came to be known as "the voice of the Asian American Movement."

Volunteers will get a free buffet breakfast!

VJAMM

Friday, October 24th 12:00 at the Venice Japanese American Memorial Monument: Lincoln Blvd, Venice Blvd., Venice, CA 90291

You have an opportunity to beautify an important monument to the JA community. The VJAMM marks the spot where some 1,000 persons of Japanese ancestry from Venice, Santa Monica, and Malibu lined up with only what they could carry in April, 1942. Buses transported them directly to Manzanar.
